The minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has explained that Ghana’s newly introduced free visa policy for African nationals does not mean travellers can enter the country without approval.
He noted that although African visitors will no longer pay visa fees under the initiative announced by John Dramani Mahama, they must still complete a compulsory visa application and screening process.
In a Facebook post on Friday, April 3, Ablakwa emphasized that removing visa fees should not be mistaken for eliminating security procedures. He stressed that free visas do not equate to automatic entry, as Ghana remains committed to protecting its national security.
As part of the implementation, the government plans to launch an electronic visa (e-Visa) system in May. This platform will serve as the main application channel for all travellers, including Africans benefiting from the policy.
According to the Minister, the e-Visa system will be linked to Ghana’s Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record (API-PNR) system, along with international crime databases, to ensure thorough background checks on applicants.
He added that individuals with criminal histories or those considered security threats will be refused entry, reaffirming that no one will be allowed into the country without proper vetting.
Ablakwa also revealed that the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Transport have invested heavily in building a strong technological infrastructure to support the initiative.
The free visa policy is set to take effect on May 25, 2026, in line with Africa Day, and is expected to promote regional integration and make travel across Africa easier while maintaining strict security measures.
