power outage

Large parts of Ghana experienced a widespread power outage in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving homes, businesses, and critical services without electricity across multiple regions.

In the Greater Accra Region, several communities in the eastern part of the capital, including Oyarifa, Adenta, Madina, Legon, and Nungua, reported losing power at daybreak.

The outage also affected western Accra, with residents in Tesano, Adabraka, Weija, and Dansoman experiencing prolonged interruptions. Kasoa and surrounding communities were similarly impacted, disrupting electricity supply to thousands of households.

The blackout extended beyond Accra, with reports of power outages from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Aburi in the Eastern Region, as well as parts of the Central and Northern regions. Many residents indicated that the disruption began around 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

The cause of the nationwide outage has not yet been established, as both the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) had not released an official statement at the time of reporting.

There was also no confirmed timeline for the restoration of electricity, leaving affected communities awaiting further updates from the power authorities.

The outage disrupted early morning routines, affecting businesses, commuters, households, and users who rely on electricity and digital services for daily activities.

ECG and GRIDCo are expected to provide more information once investigations into the incident are completed and a schedule for restoring power is determined.
