GES promotion

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced the 2026/2027 academic calendar for all public basic schools, detailing reopening dates, vacation periods, mid-terms, and the schedule for the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In a circular addressed to all regional directors of education, GES directed that the approved calendar be forwarded through Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to heads of basic schools to support planning and preparations for the new academic year.

The calendar applies to all kindergarten, primary, and junior high schools across Ghana.

2026/2027 academic calendar

First Term (15 weeks)

Activity Date
Reopening September 8, 2026
Mid-term Break November 5–6, 2026
Closing Date December 17, 2026
Vacation December 18, 2026 – January 4, 2027

Second Term (12 weeks)

Activity Date
Reopening January 5, 2027
Closing Date March 25, 2027
Vacation March 26 – April 19, 2027

Third Term (14 weeks)

Activity Date
Reopening April 20, 2027
Closing Date July 22, 2027
End-of-Year Vacation Begins July 23, 2027

2027 BECE schedule

GES has confirmed that the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be held from Wednesday, May 5, to Wednesday, May 12, 2027.

The examination will be written by final-year junior high school students nationwide.

Mid-term breaks and public holidays

The Service reminded schools that all public holidays occurring during the academic year must be observed in line with the national calendar.

GES also maintained that each school term will include a two-day mid-term break to give both learners and teachers a short period of rest before academic activities resume.

Management of the Ghana Education Service has directed Regional, Metro, Municipal, District and school authorities to take note of the approved calendar and make the necessary arrangements to ensure a successful and well-organized 2026/2027 academic year.
